And we agree with a lot of their analysis…

This “manual” breast pump is probably the simplest breast pump I’ve seen on the market. It is one piece made out of 100% food grade silicone that uses simple suction to attach it to your breast. Manufacturers say you only have to let the pump do the work for you as it draws your milk using suction. Everybody agrees on how fascinatingly simple this product is. It surely looks a lot better than all the electrical pumps that need batteries or cord to connect it so you can use it.

The way Haakaa breast pump works is really easy – first, you need to sterilize it, then just place the pump on top of your nipple, apply suction and once milk begins to flow simply leave the pump alone to do its thing. People say that even if you don’t have an “oversupply” this pump would still collect some breastmilk. Because of the natural suction, the breast is stimulated to allow milk to flow. Also many women have let-down milk which usually gets spilled. With this pump you can make sure that you save it for later use.

Overall the reviews are great! It has a 4.6 out of 5 star on Amazon and it’s the 1# bestseller of manual breast pumps.

The top review on Amazon states:

“A little background. For the first month of my daughter’s life I exclusively pumped due to early on nipple confusion and inverted nipples that made breastfeeding a painful and stressful. Now hear me out I LOVE my Spectra2 electric pump, but after exclusively pumping for a month I realized quickly that it wouldn’t be sustainable (AKA it was miserably time consuming). With the use of a nipple shield I am now able to successfully nurse. From pumping all the time I had a consistent oversupply that lead to some serious engorgement. As much as I was happy to keep my supply up to build a freezer stash I was looking for a more comfortable and less time consuming way to collect milk- in comes the Haakaa.

1) Can be used while nursing OR pumping on the opposite breast.

2) Consistently pulls 2-3 oz per feeding/ pump/ let down.

3) When applied correctly it is VERY comfortable.

4) Compact- great for travel or use in the car. It takes up very little room in the diaper bag.

1) If you have a squirmy baby they may be able to kick the pump off.

2) The measurements are about .5 a ML off. If you are freezing or storing that milk be sure to measure separately to get an accurate amount.

3) Totally worth it to buy the lid or flower stopper. I have only ever had it tip once but it is still disappointing to see liquid gold go to waste.

Final thoughts- I have spent in upwards of $400.00+ to find a breastfeeding solution that works for me and my baby. If I would have known a $15.00 pump would be that solution I would have bought it a lot sooner and saved myself a lot of headache, stress, and painful boobs. Seriously even if it doesn’t work for you what is $15 in the grand scheme of things? Buy the pump, build a stash, and love nursing your kiddo.”

It’s sounding great right?! And it is! There is absolutely no denying that it is a great product. But not to have you leave with rosy glasses, let’s talk about the cons of this product. We’ve scoured the reviews and found that the biggest con is that some users find that the suction stops working as time goes by. In the scope of the number of reviews vs the number of complaints of this happening- it’s really a “small” problem, but there are enough complaints about this specifically to warrant mentioning it.

Other people mention issues such as the ability of their baby to easily kick it off of the breast while they are dually pumping and nursing. The newest version of the pump has a suction cup on the bottom to help prevent this as well as other accidental spills. Does it work 100% of the time? No. There are still people reporting spills. But these are far less than those who have a great time with the product.

If we start comparing prices across the world of breast pumps, Haakaa is maybe one of the cheapest on the market coming in at under $13 with free shipping. It’s also one of the most convenient since it doesn’t have all those little tiny parts that need to be washed every time you use it and it also doesn’t need electricity. You can simply put it in the dishwasher or steam clean it when you’re done. It’s also extremely portable and can be easily thrown into a baby bag, or even a purse.

Our Rating? 4.7 out of 5

Overall, there’s not much to complain about with this pump.  It works well for nearly everyone and the issues with it are far outweighed by the benefits and the reviews definitely speak to that!
